Do you think acupuncture really works or is a mental state?

Controversy about the usefulness of acupuncture as an analgesic continues to rage. In the past 10 years, a small but steady stream of research has suggested that certain acupuncture treatments are, in analgesic effect. But the ongoing mystery of the mechanism of acupuncture action – and less than experimental designs ideal characteristic of the trials of acupuncture for many – have left many Western scientists and journal reviewers skeptical. Range of results reported last week: * Joseph M. Helms, a physician from the American Academy of Acupuncture in Berkeley, California, performed acupuncture in 43 women diagnosed with primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain). Some of the women received real acupuncture treatments, some received placebo acupuncture (superficial treatment of the needle, not real acupuncture points), some had monthly nonacupuncture doctor visits and some were followed with no intervention. The women recorded "levels monthly pain "based on the intensity and duration of menstrual pain during a treatment period of three months and nine months after the interruption treatment. Later, the researchers compared these levels with pretreatment scores, calculated by the women at baseline. These results are described levels pain, either for the month prior to treatment or an average of the last six months, so the value was higher. In the real acupuncture group, 10 of 11 women showed a significant improvement (defined as the average pain scores of less than half the pre-treatment scores). Four of the 11 in the placebo acupuncture group showed improvement. Of the other two groups nonacupuncture, two of 11 and 10 showed improvement. In addition, Helms said, the real acupuncture group requires 54 percent less pain medication during treatment and 41 percent during the nine month period. No other group showed similar reductions. * If acupuncture is to relieve pain, it does so by activating the body's own opioids (pain killers), set in the brain? Ronald J. Lake and David H. Malin University of Houston-Clear Lake, Malcolm Skolnick at the University the Center for Health Sciences Center at Houston and his colleagues measured the responses of rats to a standardized stimulus, slightly painful, with and without pretreatment acupuncture, and with and without the injection of opioid blocking drug, naloxone. Using the answers to falter small electrical currents as a measure pain thresholds, they found significant reduction in pain between the rats pretreated with acupuncture. And in support of the opioid mechanism of action, found that giving naloxone blocked the analgesic effect of acupuncture. * Martin Benson of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in Kennett Square uses acupuncture beam laser for the treatment of chronic back pain in racehorses. Of the various means of stimulating acupuncture points in horses, says Martin, stimulation with infrared laser has advantages over needles. "Horses do not like having needles stuck in them, but not the laser," he says. Martin uses a laser of 300 microwatts (enough to create a sensation of "tingling" in human skin), treatment of nine acupuncture points on each horse, once a week for an average of 12 weeks. Before treatment, says Martin, "all 15 of these horses were not able to act at all to a level acceptable to the owner, coach or veterinarian. "After the acupuncture, he says, performance is improved in 11 of 14 horses (one was sold and lost to follow-up), as measured by their ability For stroke with acceptable results. Four of the 11 went on to win races. Martin acknowledges that these data provide no way to rule out natural healing of injuries. However, he notes that despite many other treatments, the horses had been disabled for up to four years. see full article by clicking on the link below!
